Keith Wolfram and Dr. Alexandria had a dream to create A Healthy Lifestyle Center that was healthy for the patients/clients and the environment. They renovated utilizing Green Building techniques and products. A green building is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner. Green buildings are designed to meet certain objectives such as protecting occupant health; improving employee productivity; using energy, water, and other resources more efficiently; and reducing the overall impact to the environment. Green building materials are environmentally responsible and are composed of renewable, rather than nonrenewable resources.
On the outside of the building you will notice the Xeriscaping or “dry landscape”. Xeriscaping takes advantage of naturally occurring, water frugal plants that happen to be extremely attractive. Landscapes can use large amounts of our drinking water. Arizona’s hot and dry climate causes extremely high evaporation rates. Combine that with the low average rainfall in the area and it’s obvious why xeriscape is the way to go.
Solar panels are used to heat water and provide electricity to the building. We all know the effects current fuels have had on our planet in the form of global warming; after all, the sun is Arizona’s greatest source of renewable energy. The multi-paned windows compliment the efforts of the solar panels by reducing heat within the building.
As you enter the building you will notice the beautiful cork flooring. Cork flooring is a renewable resource that stands out in many ways. Unlike vinyl and other synthetic materials it does not release toxic fumes. It is also a natural fire retardant, is hypoallergenic and insect resistance. This sound resistant flooring is also very comfortable to stand and walk on.
Now, notice the cabinets and countertops. Keith, a kitchen renovator and cabinet installer, especially chose these beautiful Neil Kelly cabinets. Since the cabinet bodies are made with wheatboard, there is no formaldehyde outgassing, as there would be with conventional factory cabinetry made from particle board, which contain urea formaldehyde glues. The finishes are no-VOC (volatile organic compound). The countertops are from IceStone® durable surfaces and consist of recycled glass and concrete. They are strong like granite, not as porous as marble and heat-resistant like stone. The chemical composition is benign and 99.5% inorganic making it a very safe material from the standpoint of toxicity and fire resistance.
The paint on the walls is “Zero VOC”. VOC’s or Volatile Organic Compounds, are unstable compounds that are ‘off gassed’ into the air causing toxic air pollution. VOC’s cause toxic air pollution increasing the chances of becoming chemically sensitive as well as creating a low-level toxic ozone in our environment.
